ABSCOM® ABS Plastic

ABSCOM® is our registered trade name for ABS polymer products, compounds of Acrylonitrile, Butadiene and Styrene. ABS resins are opaque, glossy, rigid with good low temperature properties and dimensional stability. By playing on the proportion of the main components and by adding additives such as flame retardant, heat, and UV stabilisers and various pigments we are able to deliver a range of products to suit your needs.

Our ABS compound grades (ABSCOM®) are used in many industries such as the automotive, leisure, safety and hygiene sectors.

What is ABS plastic?

Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS plastic) is a common thermoplastic polymer closely related to Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate (ASA plastic). ABS is synthesized by polymerizing styrene and acrylonitrile in the presence of polybutadiene. The butadiene component in its composition provides increased toughness and impact resistance.

ABS materials comprise a continuous phase of styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer, in which polybutadiene rubber is dispersed in small amounts.
The primary distinction between ASA and ABS plastics lies in their resistance to environmental factors. ABS plastic is less suited for outdoor applications because it is susceptible to degradation when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light. This UV exposure gradually breaks down the butadiene part, leading to a loss of integrity and brittleness in the ABS material.

Critical Characteristics of ABS Plastic
• Good impact resistance, even at low temperatures.• High toughness and rigidity.
• Easy to machine and finish, with excellent dimensional stability.
• Relatively lower resistance to UV and weathering compared to ASA.
• Prone to yellowing over time when exposed to sunlight.
